Background of the study
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have emerged as influential actors in community development, particularly in environmental sustainability. In Nkanu West, Enugu State, these organizations actively promote ecological stewardship through education, advocacy, and community mobilization (Chukwu, 2023). With increasing environmental degradation, the involvement of FBOs offers a unique perspective on sustainable practices that are rooted in ethical and moral imperatives. The study examines how these organizations integrate environmental care into their religious teachings and community outreach programs. It also explores the extent to which their initiatives have fostered behavioral changes towards resource conservation. Scholars argue that FBOs can bridge the gap between policy and grassroots action, creating a synergistic effect for environmental sustainability (Nwosu, 2024). Through community engagement and spiritual leadership, FBOs can mobilize resources and influence environmental attitudes, thereby contributing to local sustainability efforts. This evaluation will shed light on the effectiveness of such approaches, with the potential to inform broader strategies in environmental governance (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite their proactive role, FBOs in Nkanu West face challenges in scaling up environmental initiatives due to limited funding, resistance from local stakeholders, and policy gaps. The lack of empirical research on their impact hinders the development of supportive frameworks. There is a need to critically evaluate these organizations’ strategies to understand their contribution to local environmental sustainability (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To assess the environmental sustainability programs initiated by FBOs.
To evaluate the impact of FBO activities on community environmental practices.
To recommend strategies for enhancing FBO contributions to environmental sustainability.
Research questions
What environmental initiatives have FBOs implemented in Nkanu West?
How effective are these initiatives in changing community practices?
What challenges do FBOs face in promoting environmental sustainability?
Research Hypotheses
H1: FBO-led initiatives positively influence community environmental behaviors.
H2: There is a significant relationship between FBO activities and improved local environmental practices.
H3: Enhanced resource allocation increases the effectiveness of FBO initiatives.
Significance of the study
The study provides critical insights into the role of FBOs in promoting environmental sustainability, offering data-driven recommendations for policy makers and religious leaders to strengthen local environmental governance in Nkanu West (Nwosu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to faith-based organizations operating within Nkanu West Local Government Area, focusing solely on their environmental initiatives and impacts.
